Subject: Kasparov's draw offer in Game 6: Confusion or obfuscation?

Author: Gawril Markov

Garry Kasparov (http://www.worldchessrating.com/522499435.html?236853121314198)
and Amir Ban (http://www.chessbase.com/games/2003/amir1.htm) both report that
Kasparov's draw offer was made after move 26. In addition, Amir Ban writes that
"he (i.e. Kasparov) told the arbiter that since the program was showing negative
score, he can claim a draw", which seems odd since it implies that Kasparov was
aware of Deep Junior's evaluation.

However, when I followed Game 6 live on ICC and chess.fm, it seemed quite clear
that Kasparov offered the draw already after making the exchange sacrifice in
move 23. Although a strange moment to make a draw offer, it was subsequently
confirmed in the on-site report from chessbase.com
(http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=782) and repeated by Andre
Schulz (http://www.chessbase.de/events/events.asp?pid=493). In his game
analysis, GM Karsten Mueller concurs with these reports
(http://www.chessbase.com/games/2003/x3dmueller.htm). For TWIC, Malcom Pein also
reports Kasparov to have offered the draw after move 23
(http://www.chesscenter.com/twic/event/kaspjun03/gm6.html).

Conclusion: Unless all of these reports are in error, Kasparov and Ban are not
reporting truthfully.
