That is a good price considering that I recently paid $100. Is it a good
program for beginners? That depends. None of the rated levels are weak
enough - I have a hard time keeping up with the lowest ratings and I am
a strong class A player. (I only play speed chess against it and it has
assigned me a rating of 1290! The lowest rating I can select is 1350.)

But there are other levels on the thing that you might find helpful. For
one thing there is the sparing and friend levels, and there are the "fun"
levels where you can increase the blunders on the part of the computer.

There are also some special coaching levels where it will warn you that
you made an error. It can also analyze a game for you.

The menus in my opinion take a lot to get used to. With CM4000 I didn't
even have to read the manual, but with Fritz 5 I had to refer to the
manual frequently.

Extreme chess supposedly sells for about $19 to $20 and has most of the
same features. But I like Fritz 5 better. I have both. Although the
voice feature might seem silly to some, I think that it is worth the
price of admission. I find it quite amusing (and sometimes instructive.)
