Actually 500 Opterons were released in December. They were released for the purpose of compatibility testing. I received x86-64 manuals last August. I had the first two last summer. AMD has been demonstrating Quad Opteron machines since last June. The Opteron itself has been around even longer. One Opteron was apparently benchmarked (without permission) using OpenSSL. Keep in mind that this is beta silicon running at less than half the clockrate it will be released at. Article found here: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=4965 OpenSSL is heavily influenced by the 64-bitness of the Clawhammer/Opteron (they are for all practical purposes identical). Chess will not be -as- heavily influecned, but bitboard programs like Crafty will see some speed gains. Most benchmarks indicate that the 800 MHz Clawhammer is as fast as the 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 in 32-bit software. This is a pretty good estimate, I think. AMD estimates a 25% performance increase in 32-bit code, and the Athlon seems to already be about 33% faster than the Pentium 4 clock-for-clock. Multiplying the two factors together you get (3/4)*(2/3) = 2/4 = 1/2, which fits with the benchmarks. AMD will be releasing Clawhammer and hopefully Opteron as well around 2 GHz like the current Athlons. Intel plans to hit 3.6 GHz by June. -Matt
