There are many Intel fans and many AMD fans alike who ignore facts. A friend of
mine is so blindly devoted to Intel (his uncle works for Intel) that he wouldn't
admit AMD had the performance edge when they did. I guess the AMD/Intel debate
rages on much like the Mac/PC debate used to. That is to say that it is more of
a brand loyalty issue than anything else.

Personally I am an AMD fan simply because AMD is more bang for the buck. I like
getting more for my money. In 6 months there will always be something faster and
better, and it is more reasonable to me to sacrifice performance and upgrade
sooner.

Intel vs. AMD performance is usually not horribly one-sided when tests are done
fairly. It never has been. Bob's dual-Xeon 2.8 GHz ran a little bit faster with
HT than my AthlonMP 2000 extrapolated to 2400. (I do not have 2400's around to
test, but I tested my 1600's and 2000's and assumed a linear speedup.) The
extrapolated numbers were within 10% of the 2.8 using HT. It is wholly possible
that I could have achieved better numbers, but I am not going to dwell on that.

It is too bad you aren't waiting until April. I am curious to see how the
Opteron would fare.
