The bulk of the cost of this machine Michael was the extra memory and cramming
as many 146 GB SCSI drives into the machine as the bays would allow (to provide
space for Eugene's Tablebases as he generates more and more of them). I am using
this machine for my business applications too so I added RAM and hard disk space
since it's all tax deductible anyhow. In reality if someone wanted this machine
purely for chess they could build a decent version with 1MB RAM for under
$5,000.00. My first intention was to build the machine in this manner but then
the extra's started to look appealing and I figured since it was tax deductible
why not add them to prevent future upgrades? Now all i will have to upgrade are
the processors as newer ones are released. To me it just made more sense to
purchase the options now and let Dell worry about installing them.
