Also David, If i were to run Fritz with no opening book it would likely hurt
chessmaster more than Fritz. First of all with no book Fritz plays "classically"
(meaning his opening moves will be focused around control of the center of the
board). Since there are a limited number of moves in the opening which can be
used to achieve this goal (i.e development of central pawns, then knights, then
bishops, castling, etc.) Fritz, even with no book loaded, will most likely stay
in known positions for 8 to 12 moves. If fritz does deviate from book, it will
be with a "harmless and unpunishable" move like a6 or h6 or something along
those lines. When that happens, Chessmaster will also be taken out of "book" and
will then be left to defend the remainder of the opening on his own. Try to bear
in mind that even a 1.2 Celeron Laptop is more than a match for playstation 2.
If we were to deviate from book I think the advantage would favor Fritz more
than if we spent 20 moves in book together and came out with an even position
for the middle game. The choice is, of course, yours since you are beginning the
match with a handicap in cpu speed. Perhaps others here have played such a match
before and may have helpful information.
