That _is_ a good thing. Good service can be worth paying for if you need it. It
still does not change the quality of the product to begin with.

That is simply not true. Different components have different performance
characteristics. Also, stability and responsivity of the system can vary widely.
My old home built Celeron 300A felt way faster than some 600 MHz Compaqs I've
worked with. Of course in raw calculating speed, the 600 MHz was faster. But the
same goes for two 3.06Ghz machines. One can feel much slower than the other, and
one can actually be slower than the other for computer chess. Properties besides
speed are important too. Noise, heat, lifetime, stability etc. Why buy a machine
that is slower, noisier, generates more heat and breaks down quicker and crashes
more often and costs way more, just to get some service I would never need in
the first place if the quality was good? None of my own computers have ever
breaked down, and they get used a lot. I just sell them when it's time for an
upgrade.
