I think these Free Programs are there to make the world a better place :-) They are free, yet they don't really much harm the commercials financially. (Testament: Chessbase, Chessmaster). The average person usually seeks the bells and whistles. I agree that these great free programs are mostly in the realms of the Computer Chess Fan. Ask any average Computer Chess Fan and they will say they have not even heard of Ruffian or Arena. Perhaps if the stats are made available, we will all see that Arena is Downloaded mostly by people who are really in to Computer Chess.
