Chess geeks who are the technical sort can install engines + Winboard + SCID and have a lot of the functionality of the major chess systems. However, they still fall far short of what the average chess users need. The excellent free engines, interfaces, and databases are a wonderful innovation. They will force the commercial systems to keep on their toes, and continue to make their products stronger and still maintain the full functionality and ease of use. If Yace and Ruffian become commercial (certainly not an impossibility) other free engines will rise to take their spots. It's simply inevitable. Even at that, the commercial vendors need not kneel in fear. The free systems are less capable, harder to use and install, and not as strong as the commercial systems. I also expect that this will always be the case. The commercial systems also have much better documentation and much better support.
