It's really recommendable to take a look at these programs like SCID, Arena, also WinBoard of course (etc.) if you didn't try it yet. This will answer many of your questions and provide interesting software entertainment at the same time, so to speak. You'll encounter annoying bugs then and when mostly *only in early versions* of freeware, but IMO most certainly not in the one's mentioned above. I'm currently not aware of serios problems, at least not with most "standard" functions. So the download is no risk at all, and will allow useful insights. All 3 include comprehensive help files/docs. >>- *right*-click into the notation -> small board graphic pops up, >> showing the position before that move > >That seems childish because when I seek for the chess of it I want the position >AFTER the move, that is exactly what CB8 is doing. Or are you talking about >text and not cbh? Ok, I give something for FREE! It works with a right-click into the *PGN* window, which serves the same purpose as the notation display in other chess programs, but the sense is, it doesn't change the position on the main board. (A left-click would jump to the positions directly using the main board, as usual.) I.e., an analysis task could run continously and would not be disturbed, while you can click into the notation and take a look at the rest of the game with those pop-up boards. (I don't know if CB8 has such pop-up boards too, CB7 doesn't.) The PGN window is also used for the notations in SCID with it's own database format (a very fast database code btw.). >In 20 years I suppose we will have this: I click into a notatio and the prog >gives me the position of the - - - the beginning of the combiation or whatever >chain that led to the position I clicked on! This sound similiar to me like variation windows already existing in i.e. Shredder "classic", and in Arena too, which is capable to automatically replay the engine's current analysis primary variation in a new (smaller) board window. Fritz 7- has that too (but without the automatic replay if I don't miss something). >For sure I like Crafty in the Chessbase surrounding. I didn't analyse the learning and time management behaviour of the cb-native Crafty (I don't think that it does position learning, because this version doesn't create a learning file). AFAIK there is no difference between using Fritz 8 and CB8 with the cb-native Crafties, but there are definetely differences between that and the WinBoard executeables of Crafty. I guess this is mainly due to the different compilation of the sources, partially also due to engine features available or not available, as you mentioned. But that doesn't mean the cb-native version would be significantly slower or weaker (or vice versa), just with different results in some positions; some tests were nearly identical too. I used to use Crafty for endgame analysis (and for various engine matches of course), but meanwhile I prefer Chess Tiger 14 for the still more complicated, and Shredder 5.32 for the tablebase-near endgame positons. But if you don't have these, I guess Crafty is still a very good choice because it has very good endgame knowledge as far as I can tell, and accesses the nalimovs too... According to the WM-Test, Crafty 18.10 is 2nd best *freeware* endgamer so to speak (Aristarch 4.5's result being a bit better). Regards, M.Scheidl
