AFAIK this is always GUI dependant (I'm not aware of engines themselves that would support the Thompson data like the Nalimovs). Shredder 5 still had the Thompson support and can use WinBoard engines via it's own adaptor, versions 6/7 probably too (?) but I'm not sure at the moment. I don't know if there is a freeware GUI which can read these databases. I also use the Thompson data then and when (because I don't have the 5-piece nalimovs, only 4-piece mainly), but not in concunction with an engine. I use CB 7.0 for that, to check 5-piece positions when they have been reached in the game. But AFAIK no engine or program can use the Thompson's nalimov-like, IOW they are not access during the engine's calculations (earlier) in the search. Btw. you should be aware that the Thompson data isn't always 100% reliable, unfortunately. Not only that the data of the 4th CD edition is affected partially (it hasn't been tested like the CD editions 1-3 have, as Ken Thompson has explained), recently also an obvious mistake in a Thompson database from the CD 1-3 set has been found. Very sad. >2) to the other idea you missed my idea that in 20 years the engines understand >chess and jump to the start of a combination or reasonable line. You know what I >mean? I'm sure that could be easily done by a good GUI programmer. "Replay previous moves", number configurable. Although I guess I wouldn't use that often, as I can go back and forth in the notation anyway. Or did you think of a kind of retroanalytical function of the engine, not connected to the game itself? (I probably still don't understand, but never mind...) Regards, M.Scheidl
