Roughly in order of practical value: N + M < 2B N <= B R + P < 2M < R + 2P M + P < R < M + 2P 2R <= Q + P 3P < M where M = B|N The "real" rules are much more complicated than this. You must also take into account how many pawns are on the board; whether pawns are on both sides of the board; whether the position is open or closed; how many major pieces are left; King safety; is it an endgame or a middlegame, etc.
