The Chessbase GUI has three phases during the playing of a game: 1. The opening (definition: when the current position is present in the .CTG opening book being used). When the opening book is being used, the engine is not used. 2. The main game (which is where the chess engine is used to select moves). 3. The endgame (definition: when a position is on the board that is present in an endgame tablebase). When endgame tanlebases are being used, the engine is not used. The three phases can overlap. For instance, if the opening book is left, but a position later arises that is in the book (by transposition), phase 1 starts again. In the same way, if the endgame tablebase collection is not complete, for example some of the 4-piece tablebases are missing, phase 2 might restart after the capture of a piece or the promotion of a pawn. If no .CTG book is being used, phase 1 is never activated, as far as the Chessbase GUI is concerned, and the engine is activated immediately. Some engines, such as Comet, have their own opening books, so the engine quizzes its own book, unknown to the Chessbase GUI. On the other hand, in the case of the game being out of the .CTG book, if the engine being used has its own book, it will check whether the position is in its own book. This is very unlikely to happen with one of the standard Chessbase books, but it can happen in the case of an (inferior) .CTG book created by a user. In this case, there will be a mixture of use of the .CTG book and the engine's own book, but the .CTG book will have priority. Phew... I know what I meant by all that, but it was difficult to describe. I hope I've made myself clear.
