The price of chessmaste in USA is only 19.95$
The programmers do not earn 40-50$ for a copy

because Bob wants to improve his program and the fact that it is free help him
to get ideas about it

It is not so simple to modify the source code of crafty to improve it
significantly because you have to understand it and crafty is a long program
that Bob worked many years to develop it
