As I understand, he mean in Shogi you can start searching for a mate very soon in the game, because the biggest difference with chess is : in Shogi, as a move, you can put a piece you took to your opponent anywhere on the board ! May be there are 10 more lines where you've to check "is there a mate or not ?"
