Hi John!

As others have told you there is a lot of stuff to evaluate, I suggest you start
with material AND some basic bonus to where the piece is placed on the board
(simple to code with a lookup table). The reason for the position bonus is (as
with all evaluation I guess) to give the engine an idea of what to do when no
alternative for winning loosing material is found.

If you have only material in your evaluation you'll notice some very strange
moves back and forth in the beginning of the game, then suddenly after some 5-10
moves your engine gets a clue of how to attack or defend and the game is
started! This approach very often leave your engine in a very bad starting
position, if this happens to you it is ok, just add position bonus and you'll
see much more "clever" moves.
