As I have said before, 2D is best for memorizing a position and real life pieces
are best for playing. The 3D in computer programs doesn't fit the bill in either
category. Until virtual reality chess programs are available, 3D will always
suffer. Even though 2D is not as good as real life, it still surpasses the 3D
sets so far because of the inability to easily change the angle of viewing. This
is not needed in 2D even though 2D suffers from lacking piece height. At first
the best 3D looks good until you realize that you can't easily look over the
whole board. Then you change back to 2D even though it is also less than optimal
for the piece height reason. What we need is a PC board that connects to chess
servers like ICC.
