Dan Corbitt recommended PowerArchiver8 at www.powerarchiver.com to me when i had trouble with bz2 files. i have been using it ever since... it opens everything including RAR and selfextrcting files. Also you can explore them before you open them. It's not shareware but it's cheap and good....for windows.
