Human nature being what it is.  It is also possible (however) to learn from a
program by reading the source, tracing through it, etc.

You cannot copyright an algorithm, only the implementation of an algorithm
(though -- sadly -- it is possible to patent an algorithm).  At any rate, it is
logically possible to have an open source project which has as its nature the
concept to share ideas.  Probably, there will be abuses, but there are abuses of
any other sort of arrangement as well
