No doubt that it is productive  but it is not an optimal solution
because the panelty should be bigger if the pawns are a-b and smaller
if the pawns are a-b-c-d and the distance to pawns is also important.

another point is that it can be relevant also in endgames that are
not pawn endgame and I remember a drawn rook endgame from the ssdf games
(KRPPP vs KRPPP) when chessmaster6000 lost against Fritz5.32 because
it liked it's king in the centre when
the pawns of both sides were a-b-c pawns.
