I think the answer is 'do as you please', although I always turn my machines on and off. Certainly with newer machines having absurdities like 500W power supplies the amount of electricity used, even with power saving and suspend modes, is significant; my PC (a Shuttle XPC) is much more cleverly designed - and quieter - than those monsters and one of the reasons I bought it was low energy consumption (AMD 2400+, 200W power supply, flat panel monitor takes 44W maximum). Like you I've heard various folk tales about turning the PC on and off doing horrible but unspecified things to the internals because of 'thermal shock' and suchlike, but have never found them convincing; all my machines have been turned on and off through their lifetimes and all are still going although one is 12 years old ...
