first, did you decompress the tablebases?  (gunzip).

second, given a few seconds of time per move, it should mate with B+N
without tablebases.  At least mine has done this many times.  Without a
significant amount of time, however, it can't mate from the worst-case
type positions (mate in 31) in under 50 moves, as it will make one key
mistake that makes this take about 60-65 moves.  But I've never seen it
outright fail.

Bogus mates, however, are only caused by non-uncompressed databases, which
will wreck everything...
