Subject: Hard to imagine why GM's are offended.

I can see why resignation would be a courtesy, but there is always the
possibility of error.   Recently Karpov failed to find a mate in 3 in a KQB
vs K against Judit Polgar and his flag fell.  (A local master showed me
the position.  Supposedly it was in the September Chess life.)

Many years ago Kasparov with KQB vs K stalemated Tal in the world speed
chess championship.  Tal won the tournament!
