Keeping only the result saves a lot of space, and it is useful information. But to build the tablebases, I think it is neccessary to have all the posible sons, even if they are unlikely. Remember that there are no logical lines to computers, they have to calculate everything. In their search tree appear ridiculous lines and positions which we will never see in actual play. Some of them can be two pawns against one, and if you have a tablebase you need to evaluate that accurately. By the way, what do you mean by "unknown" in this context?
