I fail to see what that has to do with my point that a doctor will positively influence more people than a world class chess player. And once again, you fail to see the depth of the problem you describe. So the operation costs $100,000 (probably not, but whatever). Why do you think that is? Someone had to research and develop the technology or techniques required to perform the surgery, and that someone spent hundreds of millions or billions of dollars to do so, and they probably aren't willing to leave it at that, and would like a return on their investment. Next in line is probably the hospital where the equipment resides. They paid a hefty sum for it, no doubt, and they're not going to let doctors use it for nothing. The doctors are actually quite far removed from the problem you describe, and they have to make a living too, you know. As I said in my other response, it ain't cheap being a doctor.
