Probably you overestimate how much money a chess player makes. Had Kamsky not retired, he could be easily "earning" with his enourmous talent and discipline at least one million dollars a year, no doubt. But he can not keep all that money, he needs to pay the seconds (which are not cheap), he has to pay taxes, for sure there are other expenses related with the work as a top chessplayer of which we are not fully aware. And of top of that, his father did not work, Gata had to support him financially. José.
