For your "convienience" they automatically renew your domain name for a few years (and for a couple of hundred dollars). I had created and maintained a website for a group of friends for a while, and the "group" disbanded and the website was no longer needed. Many months later I was charged for the renewal. I'm sure it was in the hundreds of pages of fine print I didn't read. In addition to that, they prey on the lack of technical knowledge of their registrants. I recall that after I registered they "recommended" that I use a particular host (who had their hand in register.com's pocket, no doubt), and when I went to change the DNS and IP for the domain, I got a bunch of "We won't have control of your website so I hope you know what you're doing! You may be screwing up big time!" kind of warnings. An all around corrupt operation if you ask me.
