A few thoughts (maybe not correct)...

If you hashed the fifty move counter at all, I think then you create problems
for repetition detection. Besides, if you reach a fifty move count of 45, there
is probably nothing you can do to avoid a draw anyway (unless there is a long
mate in the works, like KBN vs. K, and you can mate before you hit the fifty
move limit). IIRC, this is one of those problems that has no good solution.
