to save you time, you should consider these programs (I have tried them all)

Palm:

Chess Tiger - strongest Palm Program, based on the latest Chess Tiger v15.0
program. Many different options available for the user. # 1 Pick.

Chess Genius - Classic Chess program by Richard Lang, based on the 1989 World
Championship program "Mephisto Roma". Written in the strictest sense of the
Palm GUI - intuitive, simple, clean interface, fewer user option than above. #2
Pick.

All the other Palm programs are simply not worth it - save for Chessmaster for
the Palm which does have the personality settings - but it is weaker than above
and does NOT have PGN capability.

Pocket PC:

Pocket Grandmaster -3 different chess engines to chose from - Ruffian, SOS and
Gromit. My top pick. WIth Ruffian, very strong. #1 Pick because of 3 engines.

Chess Genius - updated engine over the the Palm version. New version 1.4 just
released seems to be stronger at ST controls. #2 pick - I like this program a
lot.

Pocket Fritz 1 or 2. If you can find Pocket Fritz #1 for <$25, that would be
my top pick -- but it is sold out in many places. I had Pocket Fritz 1 and
loved it. Unfortunately, it cost me $50. Pocket Fritz 2 came out and it was
going to cost me another $50 - NO UPGRADE AVAILABLE - so I said "No, thank
you". They both have online database support which I never used and other
programs do not have. That could be important to some people. It also has full
PGN support with variations - that is nice if have for example the lastest CI
#86 on pgn format and want to over games on the train and play out the
variations. #3 Pick -- this would be number #1 pick if priced @ $29.95 or less.

I also have Chess Partner Pocket PC - a little weaker than the other Pocket PC
programs, I play this one after I get tired of losing to the others. It does
have PGN support,

IMO, none of the other Pocket PC program are worth it - I have tried them and
deleted them. Some people like Pocket Crafty, but it refused to run on my
machine. Microsoft Chess for the Pocket PC is the worse of the lot. I could
play from the white side only, no pgn support

Also, I think (not 100% sure), Pocket Fritz 2 works ONLY on Pocket PC 2002 and
not PocketPC 2000, I would guess Pocket Fritz 1 would work on both Pocket PC
2000 AND Pocket PC 2002. So if you had older pocket pc, Pocket Fritz 2 may not
be an option. Also, not all programs have "full" pgn support - some do allow
for variations - others do not. But the ones I recommended have at least some
PGN support unless otherwise noted.
