Rebel Decade 2.0 being for free didn't stop me from buying Rebel9. But Rebel10 and it (still), being a dos program does put me off. Also it appears that the 'EOC' disk not being included as part of the package, like the utilities/games CD of Rebel9, also make the purchase for me less desirable. (At least for now). And also the fact that Rebel10 is still a does program makes it more desirable for me to buy the 32 bit Junior5, even though it has exactly the same look as Fritz5. The fact that Chess Base 7 has a feature for downloading games from Mark Crowther's, TWIC, has not made it less desirable (for me) to buy the CBM magazine subscribtion. Even more importantly, the fact that we can now upgrade Chess Base 7 online, makes the program a better and more lasting investment. Add on engines for Fritz and Chess Base are a good trend, but with so many availble, it is clear that the price per engine is still too high. As companies continue to compete and design the programs to what the buyers (an ever growing number, I believe), want, they will became more feature laden & inexpensive. The designer's may not get a lot richer, but there will be more of them and they will enjoy more sustained employment. (IMO):) mrslug - the inkompetent chess software addict!
