It depends what you are trying to accomplish. For instance, I think Movei calculates perft faster than any other program in the world. It gets over 10Mnps (yes, million) in some positions when calculating perft on my slow 733 MHz computer. On a fast dual machine it might be able to hit 80Mnps, in calculating perft (if it supported dual processors, which would be trivial to add for perft).
