I forsee that in a few years (may even be a couple of years)Chessbase Gmbh will
become the Microsoft of the chess world. It will provide a basic interface in the
form of the Fritz GUI(just as microsoft provides the windows operating system to
which everybody provides applications) to which most of the programmers will
provide engine modules so that the purchasers can play a huge variety of engine
vs engine games without the need to have 2 separate computers or auto player
compatibility.to a certain extent this is already happening. some of the very
strongest engines are available or will soom be available as modules(F5, J5, H6,
Crafty 15, H7 Nimzo 99etc))No other chess programme provides such a versatile
facility besides all the other tremendous features that fritz has. Even new
programmers will be drawn to this scheme as they will only have to concentrate
on producing the chess engine without bothering about the GUI or other bells and
whistles. Plus they will be assured of support from Chessbase. The Dos Dinosaurs
will die a certain death.
