I am creating a database analysis project, and looking for volunteers. I have already received a few volunteers, as I announced the project on the Crafty listserver previously. The database will be freely available. Those who participate will be credited with their effort [indeed, their names will be part of the database]. Once I formalize a process, I will list more conditions. Basically, I am going to analyze chess positions and store the results in a database. In that way, we will have not only won/loss/draw/unfinished statistics, but also a centipawn evaluation, depth analyzed, etc. I will also create a query engine that can be used against the database. The SQL specifications for the database will be freely available, along with all stored procedures, triggers, etc. If you have some interest in participation, please send an email to dcorbit@solutionsiq.com and/or user923005@aol.com [my evil alter-ego]. I believe that this database project may have a very profound impact on the study of the game itsself. A relational interface, reachable through standard, off-the-shelf tools is needed to accelerate the study. The process I formalize will assume Crafty as the analysis engine, but if you have other means to analyze EPD positions [like Manfred's EPD tool and Rebel] that would be just as good, as long as the EPD records receive annotations as to the effort. I will create some scripts that can help to automate the process so that little human work is needed. Basically, I am just looking for shared computer time, so that the project can run over the weekend or at night when you go home from work, or during the day on your home PC or whatever.
