WB provides the engine with more info on which to base move selection and book learning. I think if you ask 100 engine authors, "If you were allowed to support only one chess communication protocol, which would it be?", I believe most would choose WB over UCI. Each protocol as both good and bad points. Perhaps there's room for a 3rd protocol?
