If you just want wireless for internet access and *casual* file sharing between machines, 802.11b is adequate. 802.11a gives me about 20Mbit/s demonstrated - which is quite nice. Another thing in favor of 802.11a versus 802.11b/g is that is uses the 5Ghz band which means that it won't interfere with 2.4Ghz phones or other devices, and running the Microwave doesn't interfere with it. This may or may not matter to you.
