You may want to try the Linux split command.  More info can be found here:

http://www.oreillynet.com/linux/cmd/s/split.html

While it is probably nice to have a tool that understands where one game in the
pgn file ends and another begins, this might be enough to split things into
manageable chunks that your editor(s) can handle and you can put things back
together from there.
