Hmm.. I wrote a program in lisp.. It played ok.. In the end i decided to use the lisp program as a big prototype and implement the same idea in C--the reasons being mainly pragmatic--ease of interface with winboard, portability, ability to distribute an executable, quality of compilers, etc. It sounds like you're coming at this from a theoretical angle--lazy evaluation, and the like. That's fine as long as you aren't hoping for a 2500 program that you can have someone play in their fritz interface. dave
