Chess computers and programs have always been unbeatable "for the masses" almost since they first appeared 20 years ago, yet they evidently still sell. Also, I am unaware of Playstations being cast aside because the (arcade) games cannot be beaten; quite the opposite. Games will always be produced with "training levels" and similar; the challenge in beating one of those in order to go on to the next level will always be there. In fact, never mind strength, there is a very long way to go in explaining a chess game which has been played to the average player; the 'natural language analysis' of Fritz, Chessmaster and others is a start, but there's a lot of work still to be done.
