They use a higher selectivety because it then can  sometimes finds better  moves
which otherwise would have been skipped during the search
But it also will slow down the program so it is not smart to use it in blitz
games.
Or you must have a realy fast computer.
So the longer the time control and speed the more selectivety you can use
To improve the search.

For Blitz games you also can use a default personality like Botvinnik
Which has proven itself many times in blitz games.
