Without recompiling, Opteron won't do you much good (vs. an Athlon XP).

With recompiling (and assuming a good compiler, which doesn't seem to be
available right now), bitboard programs will run a lot faster (> 25%?) and other
programs will run somewhat faster (> 10%?).

Right now, a $100 Athlon XP will run your chess programs better than a $900
Opteron.

In September, when the Athlon 64 (think "consumer Opteron") comes out, you might
as well get one of those. They will eventually replace the Athlon XP.
