Subject: State space vs. search space

On other board we're uncertain what each of these means. One poster said that if
you enumerated all possible positions in a game, that is the games state space,
but that doesn't sound right to me.

As I understand it, the state space is the number of legal positions that could
possibly exist within the rules of the game (IE illegal positions don't count).
The search space is the number of different games that could be played legally.

Is this correct?
