AthlonMP 2600 (~2 GHz) is the fastest offering from AMD in the AthlonMP arena.
It is possible to use AthlonXP chips, but AMD isn't going to warranty it. The
AthlonXP 2800 is only 5-10% faster, anyway. (The AthlonXP 3000 is slower than
the older AthlonXP 2800.)

The best option right now for a dual-processor machine is an AMD Opteron. The
Opteron 240 is somewhat affordable around $280 per chip. It is only slightly
slower than AthlonMP 2400 with existing software, and you are likely to see a
significant boost with 64-bit support. Right now they're being offered in rack
systems, but motherboards will hit the market soon. A friend of mine in the
business says he has the Tyan Thunder K8 & MSI offering up for preorder now.

The operating system of choice, of course, is either your favorite Unix clone
(Linux, BSD, etc.) or favorite flavor of Windows NT (Windows 2000, XP minus Home
Edition, etc.).
