Subject: Game/30 tournament results

Author: Heiko Mikala

Hi everybody!

I have just finished another tournament, this time at 30 minutes per
game. The participants were the same as in my last tournament, but
I tried to use the latest versions available. Only Crafty still played
as version 15.18, because at the time I started the tournament there
were still discussions about bugs in version 15.19.

All in all 200 games were played in this tournament!

I expected to see a very interesting tournament with very promising
new engine versions. ZChess just finished 2nd in the French Computer
Chess Championships, in front of Chess Tiger, for example. Comet A95
scored some very good results in other tournaments. Little Goliath
version 1.13 should have corrected some bugs, so we might finally be
able to see the real strength of this engine. And finally Phalanx,
being one of the most promising engines around.

Would any of these engines be able to compete with the still undefeated
winboard-engine champ, the famous Crafty? ;-)

Here are my test conditions again:

I used Winboard 4.0.0 and all the games were run on a Pentium 200 MMX
with 64MB RAM.

The tested engines were:

 - Comet A95
 - Crafty 15.18
 - Little Goliath V 1.13
 - Phalanx XVIII
 - ZChess 1.00

All engines were configured to use 8 MB Hash tables, and pondering
was disabled for all engines.
I should add, that no tablebases were used.

And, finally, here are the results:

Rebel 8.0 output for this match (top 40 percent):

Name Tot Ergeb. + = - Perc Elo

  1. WCrafty-15_18 40 27.5 - 12.5 24 7 9 68% 0
  2. Phalanx-XVIII 40 22.0 - 18.0 20 4 16 55% 0
  3. CometA95 40 20.5 - 19.5 15 11 14 51% 0
  4. ZChes100 40 15.5 - 24.5 13 5 22 38% 0
  5. Goliath113 40 14.5 - 25.5 11 7 22 36% 0

Crosstable:

             1. Crafty 2. Comet 3.Phalanx 4. ZChess 5.Goliath
             ----------------------------------------------------------
1. Crafty - 6.5 - 3.5 5.0 - 5.0 7.5 - 2.5 8.5 - 1.5
2. Comet 3.5 - 6.5 - 5.0 - 5.0 7.0 - 3.0 5.0 - 5.0
3. Phalanx 5.0 - 5.0 5.0 - 5.0 - 6.0 - 4.0 6.0 - 4.0
4. ZChess 2.5 - 7.5 3.0 - 7.0 4.0 - 6.0 - 6.0 - 4.0
5. Goliath 1.5 - 8.5 5.0 - 5.0 4.0 - 6.0 4.0 - 6.0 -

Conclusions:

Again, Crafty is the clear winner of the tournament. But, and I think
this may be a surprise for some, Phalanx finished very close to Crafty
on second place.

Comet finished 3rd this time, but only 1.5 points behind Phalanx. It
could as well have finished on 2nd place again.

Another surprise for me was ZChess 1.0. After the results of my last
matches and the result in the French Computer Chess Championships, I
would have expected to see ZChess finishing on 2nd or 3rd place.
Maybe game/30 is not ZChess's preferred time control...

Goliath again finished last, but only 1 Point behind ZChess. And, as
I've read on Djordje's chess page, a new version of Little Goliath is
close to be released and may again be a bit stronger than the versions
before.

I'll send the PGN's to Djordje Vidanovic again, and I guess he'll
include them in his archives (on his chess page) again.
Anyway, have a look at Djordje's page at http://www.cent.co.yu/chess
it's really great!

Good bye everybody,

Heiko.
