Does this 2300 player prefer to play a similarly rated engine? It is my
understanding that players wishing to improve, desire to play the strongest
opponents possible. I have read that aspiring young players even travelled great
distances just to play grandmaster competition in the days before strong
computers.

Also it seems that as you ascend the rating ladder, you must unlearn the weak
playing habits previously learned. Why not avoid forming these weak playing
habits at all cost by not playing the weaker competition while training?
I realize that this takes some of the fun out of playing chess, but it seems to
me that it is a necessary evil to sometimes lose to Rebel12(2750+)!! or
Ruffian(2650+) in 20 moves. On the flip side, what a confidence booster when you
can crush a "human" opponent just as easily with the tactical wizardry you've
learned from your quick computer lashings.
