I still don't get it.
"Correct" knowledge is correct, end of story, end of search, return score.

You are suggesting that the engine saw the checking move first, thought it was a
draw (beacuse the losing line was too deep), then saw the TB draw but failed low
because it alread had a draw (or so it thought)?

If this is the deal, then the problem is not TBs IMO, but the wrong evaluation
on the first drawn line, which wasn't draw at all.
Fix that and the right move will be selected.

You are correct that without TBs the engine will often play what gives the best
practical chances. When all the moves come back as zero it just moves around
random, and that doesn't look good to us humans :)
