As for an accurate sample, I set up a tourney where Chesstiger 14 was waxing all (inc. Fritz 8 and Shredder) up till game 15, and by the end of the tourney it was second to last place. I have no desire to run each version through hundreds of games -- it's been done to some degree. I don't think the difference is significant. The problem is that when measuring engine performance, I think 100 games IS a small sample, but that's just me. I think this way because of several factors: opening book influences for one, and the second is that all these engines are SO close it's splitting hairs. You need a larger sample to accurately measure the differences. But that's not what we're talking about in this thread: we're talking about whether this chap should upgrade. I think the smartest thing is to upgrade - if you want the older versions of the engine, then back it up before upgrading. The improvements to the GUI are worth it. Brian
