You could take a look at the size of the tablebase cache (aka EGTB hash) which
is used to buffer the tables in RAM memory. Depending on the protocol version of
Ruffian you are running (WinBoard or UCI), that setting is either in the
ruffian.cfg or somewhere in your GUI. Recommended minimum is 4 MB AFAIK. I use 8
MB (but only 4-piece tables mostly); I don't think that more than 16 MB would
make a noticeable difference.

But it's certainly an improvement if your tbs. cache size is only 1 or 2 MB now.
