For instance, I want to find out how long it'll take me to walk 100 miles after I've walked 10 miles in 2 hours. So it'll take me 20 hours? Wrong! After 12 hours at the most I'll get tired and go to sleep, so the real answer is closer to 30 hours. I know I'm being whimsical, but the fact of the matter is that after playing 10 games the result could be overly optimistic or overly pessimistic. The only way to find out how an engine will fare after 100 games is to play 100 games.
