many of the dedicated chess computers of the late 80's and early 90's were modular.meaning that you could keep the housing but replace the program by inserting a newer ,stronger module thereby eliminating the need to buy a whole new dedicated computer the Mephisto brand of chess computer perfected this concept Steve
