Go up one level in this thread

I've had a Palm and Pocket PC so here's my 2 cents:

As far as strength is concerned the Pocket PC has the edge currently due to the
faster processors. This will change soon when an Palm OS 5 native version of
Tiger is released (hopefully Christophe is listening!). That said the Palm
version of Tiger will play at 2100 ELO and Genius will play at ~2000 ELO. I
estimate that Fritz 2 (which is really Shredder) is approx 2350 ELO on an iPAQ.

So a couple of years ago I changed my Palm III for a iPAQ mainly to play chess.
I've changed back and now have a Palm M515 and I don't regret the decision -
here's why. I found the iPAQ just too bulky - it was not possible to
confortably carry it in my pocket. This has changed and I know that there is
now a slimline version of the iPAQ (iPAQ 1900?!). In contrast the M515 pops in
my pocket with no problem at all - I don't even know it's there!

Secondly, the battery life of the Pocket PCs is just not long enough. I managed
only a few hours of playing chess (chess is of course processor intensive) - not
long enough for a transatlantic flight. Also when the battery has gone dead you
lose all of your information - irritating. I've never had any problems with the
M515 - the power management seems to be better. Again this may have changed
with the recent models of the PocketPC.

Thirdly, I had problems synchnonizing my iPAQ with my PC. No problems at all
with the Palm.

My overall impression is that the Palm is meant to be a diary and address book
on steroids. In contrast the PocketPC tries to be sort of notebook replacement
- and IMHO fails.

Hope this helps!

Steve
